Yogiraj Lahiri Mahasaya and Kriya Yoga

                                                         Bhagavan Sri Shyamacharan Lahiri

Of everything, that Indian heritage and culture has offered, probably the supreme is Yoga.  Although, now a days, used in most misleading ways, ‘Yoga’ literally means union. Union of individual consciousness with cosmic consciousness. Individual senses and desires cease to exist. Where the kinetic state of Prana becomes ever-static.  Yoga Sutra of Maharshi Patanjali says:
Niscintya yoga ucyate’ – meaning: The thought-free state is yoga.
Advaita [Non-duality] is acquired in this dominion of Nishkam karma.
This science of Prana is indeed Kriyayoga as being mentioned in Yoga Sutra. The unconditional and never ending LOVE for the most primordial existence of the Universe - Prana. The 1st sloka of Sadhana Pada itself says:
“tapahsvadhyayeshvara pranidhananikriyayogah”
It is described in Shastras, that static state of Prana is the God. This prana is embedded in all human beings in the form of the shvasa [breathing] which keeps fluctuating; the path to make it stable is Kriyayoga. The exercise of Prana - Pranayama.

The Science of Prana Vibration along spinal cord

This Pranayama is quite different than the everyday word ‘pranayama’ that we might be aware of. The pranayama that Kriyayoga talks about is indeed the best and to be done along the spinal cord. Gita describes this to be Raj Vidya and Raj Gujhyang [best of all the knowledges and utmost secret]. Gita talks about this pranayama in Sloka 29 of chapter 4. The oblation of Prana vayu into Apana vayu and vice versa.  This most confidential Kriyayoga gyan can only be obtained from a self-realized Sadguru.
Kriyayoga only is mentioned by ‘Raja yoga’ by Bhagavan Sri Krishna in Gita. This is only Karma yoga. As per the rule of prakriti, due to Yuga decadence, this most sacred Yoga almost lost into oblivion. But, as Bhagavan promised in Bhagavat Gita that He will appear junctures of two yugas, He again descended in the human form of Bhagavan Sri Shyamacharan Lahiri Mahasaya. Thus at the juncture of Treta and Dvapara yuga God himself made His advent in the form of Bhagavan Sri Ramchandra, similarly at the juncture of Dvapara and Kali yuga as Bhagavan Sri Krishna. His principal aim being to re-establish His own ideals and give declining Sanatana Dharma [the eternal religion] a push. Thus accordingly at the end of Kali yuga and beginning of Satya yuga i.e. 5000 years after Lord Krishna’s period God made his re-advent in the form of Lord Sri Shyamacharan Lahiri Mahasaya. This divine child caused His descent on the 30th of September 1828 A.D. at the village Ghurni of Nadia district, West Bengal. Later on, during his childhood only, he moved to Varanasi along with his family.

Advent of God at different Yuga-junctures. Bhagavan Lahiri Mahasaya at Kali-Satya yuga transition phase

He got initiated into the holy science of Kriyayoga by Mahavatar Babaji during his stay in Ranikhet for official reasons.  In fact, the most supreme and enigmatic character of Indian spirituality – Mahavatar Babaji was another manifestation of Bhagavan Lahiri Mahasaya Himself. This was to ensure the Guru-Sishya parampara [tradition] is maintained. The way, Bhagavan Sri Krishna found His Sadguru in Muni Sandeepan.
 More on Kriyayoga :
Lahiri baba revived this perpetual science of Atman at the very juncture of Kali Yuga and Satya Yuga Satya yuga started from 1895 when Lahiri Baba left his physical form (Please refer to the book “Who is this Shama Churn” by Yogacharya Dr. Ashoke Kumar Chatterjee. Mathematical deduction with the count of pranayama, is provided) and bestowed it upon the mankind.
Yogiraj Lahiree Mahasaya used to write down His most exalted yogic realizations in His confidential personal diaries. These are realizations by none other than the fountain-head of Kriyayoga - Bhagavan Lahiree Mahasaya.26 such diaries; they are treasures to the entire world - depicting the true Advaita Sanatana Dharma.

Purana Purusha Yogiraj Sri Shama Churn Lahiree

Kriyayoga - the primordial and perpetual science of true Sanatana Dharma as revived by Bhagavan Sri Shamachurn Lahiree Mahasaya.

Purana Purusha - the book

Yogiraj Lahiree Mahasaya used to write down His most exalted yogic realizations in His confidential personal diaries. These are realizations by none other than the fountain-head of Kriyayoga - Bhagavan Lahiree Mahasaya.26 such diaries; they are treasures to the entire world - depicting the true Advaita Sanatana Dharma. Dharma that's latent in all of us and is to be realized only through Yoga Sadhana. Dharma that's beyond any caste, community, colour, creed. It's indeed the science of the soul inside. The science beyond all the other sciences. The mergence of individual consciousness into universal cosmic consciousness. The science of ubiquitous Prana. The science of being One with the Supreme Non-dual entity.

Yogacharya Dr. Ashoke Kumar Chatterjee and his guru Yogivar Sri Satya Charan Lahiree Mahasaya

These 26 diaries were in the custody of Yogivar Sri Satya Charan Lahiree Mahasaya(grandson Yogiraj Lahiree Mahasaya). He, on a later date, asked his most favourite and advanced disciple Yogacharya Dr. Ashoke Kumar Chatterjee to write a spiritual and authentic biography of Yogiraj Lahiree Mahasaya by
entrusting him with those 26 invaluable diaries."Purana Purusha Yogiraj Sri Shama Churn Lahiree" authored by Yogacharya Dr. Chatterjee is that rare book which is directly based on the personal diaries of Lahiree Mahasaya.

This book is a remarkable blend of spirituality, literature and philosophy. The author himself being a Mahayogi of the highest echelon, illustriously describes the sublime spiritual life of Lahiree Mahasaya in the book. The book is actually part biography and part commentary on Lahiree Mahasaya's life, on the Indian scriptures, including The Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads. There is enough previously unpublished material about Lahiree Mahasaya's life that it is well worth reading for that alone. It is wonderful to learn of even the mundane occurrences in the great yogi's life, such as how he would take tiffin with a little amount of ghee and sugar for breakfast and smoke a hookah everyday after dinner, and how he travelled often by boat to the court of the King to tutor his son. These warming and inspiring stories bring Lahiree Mahasaya even closer to heart.

Advent of Bhagavan at different Yugas
Going further deep, the book focuses on the scientific essence of ancient Indian Yoga sadhana and it’s ideals as revived by Bhagavan Shama Churn Lahiree Mahashaya. It traces back the origin of the term 'Kriyayoga' which is also mentioned in Yoga Sutra by Maharshi Patanjali and was later changed to 'Rajayoga' by Sri Krishna. It puts light on the ancient scriptures and tries to find out their true meaning, hiding behind, from the yogic perspective. The book describes Yogiraj's search for his guru Mahavatar Babaji, his exalted yogic state.

Also the book reavels the true identity of, perhaps the most supreme and enigmatic spiritual entity of India, Mahavatar Babaji.

The book "Puarana Purusha" is undoubtedly the Gita of Satya Yuga (Satya Yuga started from 1895 as soon as Bhagavan Shama Churn left His mortal frame); a must read for all initiated into Kriyayoga and also for all seekers of this blessed path and for everyone else.
